When the Gavel Is Down, the Ego Should Follow /G\✨
Freemasonry teaches equality, yet we sometimes forget that lesson when titles enter the room.
Worshipful. Right Worshipful. Very Worshipful. Illustrious. Eminent.
These titles were established for order and harmony within the Craft. They help define responsibilities and guide the work of the lodge. They were never meant to elevate one Brother above another, but rather to reflect a role of service for a season.
An office is temporary and the honor attached to it is meant to remind us of duty, not status.
At times, however, it can be easy for any of us to hold too tightly to titles after our term has ended. What was once a symbol of responsibility may unintentionally become something we identify with, rather than something we simply carried for the lodge.
This is why Masonry continually calls us back to humility ⚖️
Instead of focusing on how we are addressed, it is far more meaningful to reflect on what we have contributed.
Did we strengthen harmony?
Did we support the Brethren?
Did we leave the lodge better than we found it?
A Brother’s reputation does not need to be announced. It is easily known by asking the Brethren, because true respect is earned through consistent labor and quiet dedication.
The Square reminds us to act justly.
The Compasses remind us to govern our passions.
And the Level reminds us that we meet as equals, regardless of rank or title.
In the end, Freemasonry does not measure us by labels, but by service.
Titles may fade, but the work and the legacy of humility, remains. So mote it be! - Shin✨
